What to Expect During a Dental Crown Procedure
A dental crowns can help restore the appearance of your teeth when you find yourself dealing with stains, deformities, or structural damage to teeth. Crowns are versatile restorations that have many uses, including repairing broken, decayed, and chipped teeth. The dental crown goes over the visible part of the tooth being treated, covering up any imperfections on it.
The dental crown procedure
Crowns serve as protective coverings that can be used to improve a tooth’s size, shape, appearance, and strength. They can be made from a wide variety of materials, like stainless steel, gold, porcelain, resin, acrylic, and ceramic. Ceramic and porcelain crowns give you the best aesthetics, while gold crowns are the most durable, making them ideal for molars at the back of the mouth.
The process of getting a crown placed on a tooth usually takes two trips to the dentist. Here is what the process looks like.
First appointment
The first appointment involves examining the patient to determine if a crown is the right solution for their problem. The dentist will then prepare the patient’s tooth for a crown by removing enamel from its sides. This leads to a better fit with the crown, but it is an irreversible process. A tooth that has been prepped for a crown will always need a dental restoration cemented to it to protect it against bite forces in the mouth.
The patient is given a shot of a local anesthetic before the enamel is removed from the tooth, so they do not feel any pain. The dentist then takes an impression of their prepared tooth. This is used to make their custom crown. The dentist places a temporary crown on the patient’s tooth to protect it while they wait about two weeks for their custom crown.
Second appointment
The temporary crown is replaced with the customized crown. A local anesthetic is administered at the start so the patient does not feel pain as the dentist works. The dentist might make alterations as needed until they are satisfied with how the custom crown looks. The person’s smile should be restored at that point.
Life with crowns
Patients might experience increased sensitivity once the anesthetic wears off. The condition is temporary and should subside in about three days. Patients should avoid sticky and chewy foods for the first 48 hours after getting a crown placed to prevent it from getting dislodged.
The part where the crown meets with the base of the patient’s teeth needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Dentists recommend brushing twice daily and flossing once per day to keep crowns in excellent condition.
