4 Typical Problems With Dentures and the Solultions

Dentures And Partial Dentures Peoria, IL

If you just got dentures, or you are thinking of getting them, you should be aware of some common problems and how to solve them. Dentures are beneficial in that they replace missing teeth, which increases your confidence and helps you chew and speak better than with a few teeth. However, they do take some time to get used to.

Typical problems and solutions

The average time it takes to adjust to new dentures is about four weeks. Following certain tips may decrease this time.

1. Sores in the mouth

When you wear your dentures, they rub against your gums and cheeks. These soft tissues also need to adjust, so you may notice sores or redness.

Your dentist may recommend taking the dentures out semi-regularly as you are going through the adjustment process, as this gives the gums a break. For painful sores, try rinsing your mouth with saltwater. If the problem continues, your dentist may be able to make some small adjustments to make wearing the prosthetic more comfortable.

2. Difficulty speaking

After you get your new dentures, it will probably feel weird to have them in your mouth. Having them in also makes it harder to speak and enunciate certain sounds such as "s."

Practice is the recommended solution to learning to speak with this new object in your mouth. It may feel awkward at first, but the more you speak out loud by yourself, the sooner you will feel confident speaking in front of others. It may help to speak in front of a mirror, to read out loud, or to sing along with the radio.

3. Trouble eating

Eating is also difficult at first. Your bite may feel off, or your dentures may slip when you chew.

Again, practice helps. During the first week, or until you begin to feel more comfortable, cut your food into smaller pieces so there is not so much to chew at one time. Soft foods will also help you transition to eating more difficult-to-eat foods like pizza and sandwiches. It helps to chew your food slower, and chewing on both sides decreases the chances of your dentures slipping.

4. Slipping

It is common for your dentures to not fit perfectly and to slip around at first. This happens more often when talking or chewing, but it can occur at any time.

The most common solution for this problem is to find a good adhesive that will help the apparatus stay in place. Over time, your tongue and cheek muscles will learn how to keep the dentures in place. If slippage is frequent and a new adhesive does not work, you may need to go into your dentist's office to get some adjustments.

Conclusion

Dentures are a good solution for replacing teeth. However, the adjustment process takes some time. Once you get used to wearing them, you will begin to appreciate how they improve the function of your teeth and mouth.
